PANDORA’S HOT BOX a Book Club Burlesque

ART+MATTER in collaboration with Many Mouths One Stomach Present:

PANDORA’S HOT BOX – a Book Club Burlesque

Saturday, March 12, 2016, 8:00 pm

The Whistle Stop 127 W. 5th St.

Each Book Club Burlesque is a one-night only art and performance showcase celebrating a work of writing.  PANDORA’S HOT BOX is inspired by Edith Hamilton’s Mythology: Timeless tales of God and Heroes.

Hamilton’s iconic text is the classic anthology introduction to the original dysfunctional family, the Olympians, along with a plentitude of human tragedies, ill-fated affairs, epic quests, and a world anthropomorphized by a cast of nymphs, titans, muses, satyrs, furies, monster, and immortals.  Artists will interpret Mythology through installations, audio/visual art, ambient performance, and a main-stage vaudeville-style variety show with specialty acts, circus, theatre, magic, and burlesque.

In tradition, attendees are invited to read the book and dress to excess.  “What better format for a book club meeting than a toga party filled with custom art and performance?” says creative director Briggs Clinco. “This is the third annual Book Club Burlesque produced by ART+MATTER which we have come to think of as the only unofficial after party for the festival of books.”

PANDORA’S HOT BOX will be staged in The Whistle Stop Depot, a 5,200 sf warehouse transformed into custom event space with a beer and wine bar.  Owner Nancy Bender was excited to be approached about the show last fall,  “The Whistle Stop was renovated over the last ten years to provide a perfect space for whatever is imaginable.  When we received the proposal for a Book Club Burlesque, we knew the opportunity was too good to turn down we are very pleased to welcome such a great collection of downtown artists and performers, for a collaboration that should prove to be a night of bawdy fun.”

Book Club Burlesques are for mature audiences aged 21+. Tickets are available on a sliding scale of $8-$20 through www.artmatter.org or can be purchased at the door.
